Karat – Portraits

Parallely to the "Karat. Sky over St. Petersburg" documentary pictures this portrait series about the same children and teenagers between homelessness, drug use and prostitution came into beeing. With the difference, that by the portrait view they get exempted from an apparently clearly describing environment. The outward appearance of many faces gives a hint to an extraordinary situation of life, instead of this the faces keep an ambiguity, which prevents them from beeing assigned rashly.

"Karat" is the brand name of a shoe polish, which is used by a lot of kids for sniffing, because it contains solvents. But only traces refer to the topic, which is given by the title. As well the faces, jackets and sweaters, which are soiled by the polish, as the views, which are looking through the spectator, can give an idea of the background situation of the kids. But what about the kids and teenagers, who because of their outside appearance don't seem to fit into that context? Could that mean that they are earning their living by prostitution? Questions, which are not answered by the pictures and which finally have to be decided by the spectator.
